Demo Play Thursday - BUSTAFELLOWS season2 On Switch

For this week's Demo Play Thursday i played the Nintendo Switch version of BUSTAFELLOWS season2 from Nippon Cultural Broadcasting Extend and PQube.

I haven't played the original game that came out back in 2019 so going into this, and any continuation of a story, i'm interested to see if that lack of knowledge would be a hinderance.

This demo is the prologue of BUSTAFELLOWS season2 but it is also different from the start of the game. this means that the save data from this Prologue will NOT work with the main game. for spoiler reasons, it's not made clear what the differences are between this version and the final retail version. I did like that the demo makes this clear before it starts. there's a memo from the developers about this prologue. unfortunately, it's only on screen for less than 2 seconds so for this upload i have extended the time it's on screen so you can read their note.

Personally, i'm not a huge fan of how this prologue told it's story. i admit that i didn't get to the end of it, but with this video already over an hour 15 and my enthusiasm for the story dropping, i thought this was long enough. we start with an introduction to a lot of people who know each other, in a way that didn't quite feel as natural as i'd hope. there's a shocking development, and then the story goes back in time a little. we're introduced to more people who seem to know each other, but then we do get introduced to two new people who seem like they're going to be important to the story.  then i ended the demo.

Stories on Tuesday - Arcade Spirits - Part 7 - A Troubled Launch

The new game in the Stories on Tuesday series is the PS4 version of Arcade Spirits from Fiction Factory Games. this is the disc version of the game, published by PQube.

This is Part 7 of my Arcade Spirits story and at no point was i able to predict what was going to happen. this was one of the better written chapters, it felt as chaotic as an actual launch but with the added pressure of a reviewer I, the player, felt pressure my self to try and have the best launch possible. but things started going wrong and before long things spiraled out of control to the point where our character nearly got a Game Over!

Stories on Tuesday - Arcade Spirits - Part 6 - Game Over?

The new game in the Stories on Tuesday series is the PS4 version of Arcade Spirits from Fiction Factory Games. this is the disc version of the game, published by PQube.

This is Part 6 of my Arcade Spirits story and i got a Game Over. i wasn't pleased that i managed to predict where the story would go in this part, but once it happened the game over came quickly. for a time i thought that was it for this playthrough, that my story was finished. but the game had other plans.

Stories on Tuesday - Arcade Spirits - Part 5 - An Eventful Day At The Beach

The new game in the Stories on Tuesday series is the PS4 version of Arcade Spirits from Fiction Factory Games. this is the disc version of the game, published by PQube.

This is Part 5 of my Arcade Spirits story and it went in a direction i wasn't expecting. we went to the beach, one which we had been to as a kid. but it all felt out of the blue and sudden. i wasn't satisfied with the link between Part 4 to Part 5 or why not only staff but some regulars joined us. the game was also VERY keen for us to have a romantic option by the end of our day there. there was a distinct lack of artwork during this part and the day's story didn't make too much sense. for example, twice during this part we get to hang out with 2 of the 3 groups. time wise, it feels like we spend a long time with each group, and yet when we join them they've only just started their activity instead of us joining them an hour into what they're doing. For me, this has been the weakest part of the story so far.

Stories on Tuesday - Arcade Spirits - Part 4 - Francine’s Arcade Funplex Event

The new game in the Stories on Tuesday series is the PS4 version of Arcade Spirits from Fiction Factory Games. this is the disc version of the game, published by PQube.

This is Part 4 of my Arcade Spirits story and it's the culmination of the previous 2 parts, it's Francine’s Arcade Funplex Event. not only was it difficult for the main character of the story, but the choices we had to make were also difficult and by the chart shown at the end of the video, i don't think i made the best choices.

Stories on Tuesday - Arcade Spirits - Part 3 - Mega Arcade Expo

The new game in the Stories on Tuesday series is the PS4 version of Arcade Spirits from Fiction Factory Games. this is the disc version of the game, published by PQube.

This is Part 3 of my Arcade Spirits story and it takes place during our visit to MAX, the Mega Arcade Expo. most of our interactions revolve around Ashley and Teo and the hijinks the happen with one and a cool opportunity that happens because of the other.

Stories on Tuesday - Arcade Spirits - Part 2 - Lunch, Auction, And Polybius

The new game in the Stories on Tuesday series is the PS4 version of Arcade Spirits from Fiction Factory Games. this is the disc version of the game, published by PQube.

This is Part 2 and it covers the second chapter in the game, with Part 1 being our first day on the job and this chapter happening around two weeks later. With Part 1 focusing on setting the characters and us doing our basic job, this Part was able to focus on other things and it felt quite natural. i really got into the story and the new characters. i also felt i was able to understand Gavin, Naomi, and Percy better, but also i felt like i could understand my character more and hopefully we're going to go forward with real hope.

This is Part 1 and it covers the first in-game day. it's unclear how long or short the other days will be so i don't know how long videos will be going forward or whether each part will be one or two days.

Demo Play Thursday - Knight Vs. Giant: The Broken Excalibur On Switch

For this week's Demo Play Thursday i played the Nintendo Switch version of Knight Vs. Giant: The Broken Excalibur. This game, from developers Gambir Studio is already out not only on Switch but also on PS5, Xbox, and PC.

The demo for Knight Vs. Giant: The Broken Excalibur is good and bad which makes talking about it difficult. the game i played was good. it looked great, controlled well, and wasn't too difficult. the tutorial used cards but levelled them up with videos and sometimes it would introduce a second card and video showing another use for the move! I've not seen it before and in that respect it's impressive but those videos looked low resolution and a bit dark. the small details were hard to see.

The demo is from the start of the game so we also get to watch an interesting intro movie that not only explains everything but also hints as towards something being up with one of the main characters. But the intro video is compressed and looked maybe 480p. it was noticeable how bad it was when the gameplay started as the game looks great and crisp, with lots of color and high amount of detail in the art.

So the demo is good at establishing the world, the characters, and what the controls do. But what it fails to do is to convey clearly what the loop is. Knight Vs. Giant: The Broken Excalibur is a run based game, something that to me makes me think or Rouge Legacy. In those games the character typically starts of weak so the initial runs are very short, but usually we're able to make small progress and learn enough to understand the loop. Here, the game seemed to have got close to revealing the loop, but stumbled.

I got a demo over screen when the demo wasn't over. if i stopped when the screen came up, i would've understood less than i do now as i continued playing the game. By continuing i found new characters, did more in the home area, and tried out new powers. But i still don't clearly know what the loop is as i never completed one. i died at the beginning, which i'm mostly sure i'm supposed to do, and right at the end of the game. all the time in-between felt like one loop. i don't know if it is or if it isn't. i don't know if i'm meant to go out and explore repeatedly, or just do it once and move one.

It's hard to say whether it's just the demo that failed to get across this critical aspect of the game or if it's just the game itself. on one hand, i'm much more interested in the game than i was and wouldn't mind playing it. but on the other hand, i don't fully know what the game wants me to do. So yeah, the demo is both a success and a failure.
