Demo Play Thursday - Trails in the Sky: 1st Chapter On Switch

For this week's Demo Play Thursday i played the Nintendo Switch version of Trails in the Sky: 1st Chapter from Nihon Falcom and GungHo Online Entertainment.

This is one of the longest videos in the Demo Play Thursday series, if not the longest, and i'm not surprised because all of the "The Legend of Heroes" game demos have been long, but unlike them this time i kept playing because i knew from experience that i should. this video only covers the opening story, a time skip, and the first quest of the game.

The demo starts with a screen that lets you buy the game, something that not all demos do. the option menu is quite extensive and has some nice customisations that typically come to early 2000 games remade in the modern day like speed up settings. the next 9 minutes is an opening set in the game's past before having an intro to the modern day setting of the game.

the story we start with is both main characters needing to head into town as today is their final test. their goal, to become a junior bracer. our characters and the world look great on the original Switch, and a launch model too. there was some pop in where shadows appeared before the grass that sat on top, but other than that everything looked and controlled great and it didn't feel like i was playing a lesser version of the game.

by about 40 minutes into the demo, it really started to feel slow. i had turned on auto messages, but they were slow. there was nothing in the options to increase the speed of the text bubbles. the default in this demo just happens to be really slow. i had set the difficult to easy as i wanted to sit back and enjoy the story, but i was starting to get frustrated by how slow things were starting to feel and the auto messages was a key part of this.

it would take about 40 minutes to start our final training quest and get all the back story of the world. having so much information available is useful as i've never played the original on PSP. but it was a lot to take in in such a short period of time. when it came to combat, the game had some nice pictures showing how to do it. as i've played previous The Legend of Heroes games i was also able to bring some of that past experience. what's nice about the combat is that if you're facing a low level enemy you can quicky dispatch them. but if there are many of them or something stronger, you can do a quick hit and then engage them in turn based combat.

it took a little under 20 minutes to complete this final training quest and i ended this video once we became junior bracers. unfortunately, i don't know how much longer this demo was. there was no information on the game's eShop page and the game itself gave no information as to how long and what was in this demo. another issue with this demo is how out of date it is to the game. the developers have done a final job continuously updating the game since it came out, but this demo hasn't been updated. i don't know how different this demo is, or how improved the game is, from what i played in this video.

Mobile Friday - Puzzle & Dragons 0 - Two Ways To Play, Nice Graphics, Good Tutorial, But Some Bugs

For this week's Mobile Friday i tried Puzzle & Dragons 0 from developers GungHo Online Entertainment,  @PuzzleandDragons  , on my #iPhone 14 Pro.

As a casual fan of Puzzle & Dragons, i'm always interested in checking out their new games. for a company who have been making the same game for such a long time, there's also a degree of expectation placed upon them that the latest version of Puzzle & Dragons will have learned from all the previous ones and therefore should be better. so going into playing Puzzle & Dragons 0 for the first time i was really curious how things were going to go.

From the app store page it's not really made clear what the point of Puzzle & Dragons 0 is. the original game is still played by many people and it's still getting content updates. so it was a little disappointing that from the app store i didn't know what i was getting myself in for with this new game. but the app store does show the two different ways to place. the first way is vertical and the screen is laid out similar to how i took the Switch version and made it into YouTube Shorts, with the gems big at the bottom and the action smaller on top. This keeps information at the top of the screen like the time, phone battery, etc. the second way to play is more similar to the Switch version with gems on one side and the action on the other. what's disappointing is that making this mode right or left handed was in a completely different part of the options. i was also disappointed that the color blind feature didn't actually show what it would do. many games nowadays will put the items on screen and show how the feature works. the approach here in Puzzle & Dragons 0 felt a little old and a little lazy because of it.

The start of Puzzle & Dragons 0 is well designed. it begins with a tutorial that takes things nice and slow. we don't even see the home menu for a while as we're introduced to the games mechanics first, then the characters on our team, how to use them, the enemies, and so on. what is a little disappointing is that the game never reminds us that we can go into the options to check out what we've learned. like so many mobile games i've checked out, the tutorial is great until it abruptly stops. there are things about this game i didn't know because the tutorial stopped before showing me. the currency, terms like RCV, things and terminology that are used in the game were completely ignored by the tutorial. it didn't even show us where the options where or how to change the screen layout, even tho when we initially chose it the game said we could change it but never showed us how.

Thankfully, for Puzzle & Dragons 0 the core gameplay is solid and exactly what i expected from a Puzzle & Dragons game. the graphics do look nice, the music feels like an upgrade over the Switch version, and i do like how they use the phones rumble for the big attacks. But the game is still buggy. i noticed a few times i was getting combo's but my gems were still on screen. this was perhaps the biggest bug i came across. The game has hints and tips during loading screens, but on my phone the loads are so short i can't read them all quick enough. whilst not a bug, it does feel like an oversight by the developers. The "new" feature in Puzzle & Dragons 0, for me at least tho it's possible it's in other games, is how we get new monsters. i don't feel like it's explained as good as it could have been and i don't think how it's shown in the app is as clear as it needs to be. much like how the game has slowly introduced us to features, i feel this aspect should've been simplified for the tutorial and the first times we used it and then at Rank 5, it should be fully expanded into what it is. i didn't fully understand how to use this feature. the side menu stuff was never explained so i didn't know to go there to switch from red to other colors. the whole rank system was never explained so i didn't know that was happening until it told me i was Rank 5. this whole system feels like it's been tact on to the game rather than fully incorporated into it.

for Puzzle & Dragons fans, Puzzle & Dragons 0 is fine. it seems to be more of the same. for newcomers to the franchise, the tutorial will be a great start. but the bugs and abrupt cut off of the tutorial means the experience as a whole is disappointingly average from such franchise.

Version 1.0.4 Played.

Mobile Friday - Disney Pixel RPG - A Basic Gacha RPG That Needs A Little Work

For Mobile Friday this week is i tried out Disney Pixel RPG, from GungHo Online Entertainment, on my iPhone 14 Pro.

There was a lot of excitement surrounding this game when it was announced so i took a step back from it and didn't learn what it was. so i go into this not knowing much more than what the screenshots in the app store show.

Unfortunately, Disney Pixel RPG starts with a bad first impression as i had to download extra data. it wasn't as much as some other games, but it was more than i would want to download over a mobile network. it did warn that the game was going to do this download, but it didn't warn about this eating into mobile data, some games have started to provide that warning and recommend that such a download be done over wi-fi.

Next is a basic avatar creator and then we're thrown into gameplay. it's here that the game tells us what it's story is and i think it does this fairly well. once we're told about it we're put into a combat scenario and shown how to fight in Disney Pixel RPG. the controls can be set to auto or each character can be given instructions. a cool feature is that we're shown is that you don't need to go into a menu to set a command, you can flick the screen in a certain direction to command a character. But it also shows how basic some parts of the game are. there's no "battle music" or "victory theme", it all just feels generic music when you're in a world.

After this the tutorial mostly stops. it's weird that Disney Pixel RPG's tutorial had been great up to this point but then just drops us in the home world. other than some basic party stuff, there's a lot of the menus not talked about. an example is how i was completing missions throughout this video but had no idea where that section was. things were happening in combat that weren't being explained, mainly status conditions. things like this were making the game feel old, like it should've come out a few years ago.

The Gacha mechanic is another example of this. games still have it, but some of the better games find a way to incorporate it into the game world. In Disney Pixel RPG, it feels like a separate thing from the game's story, just like how games used to have such a feature. It's also not as flashy as most modern mobiles games.

a weird thing about Disney Pixel RPG is how it uses abbreviations. none of them are detailed. some can be worked out or at the very least guessed, like i did with LBrk Eff guessing it was Level Break Effect. but next to it is a "i" button that doesn't show what the abbreviation meant. There were some others i had no idea what was being abbreviated.

In it's current state, Disney Pixel RPG is playable and fine. but it's not hard to see issues. i found the High Graphic mode seemingly broken, what looked like place holder text behind final text, and sounds far to loud and annoying. i highly recommend tuning the sounds as Disney Pixel RPG has some basic sounds that can be piercing and annoying. there are aspects of it's design that are also frustrating, like it never shows in numbers how much health we have left. Or that our team has a power level but the enemy doesn't so we don't know if we're about to waste energy fighting an enemy we can't win.

Version 1.0.3 Played.

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Christmas Cup 2 Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Christmas Cup 2 Revival! (2023/12/25 9:00~2024/1/1 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the Christmas Cup 2 Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/voAWLOkg6qg. It took me much longer back then to win as the other players were highly skilled and i found it tough to do the gimmicks.

But this time i found it much easier. thankfully i was up against a couple of players and still got a few wins. i also managed to beat the boss a few times. the gimmick of making a cross with hearts wasn't too bad. but it was a little more difficult to get a high enough combo to do big damage. sometimes i felt that i wasn't getting the luck i've had in other Cups.

This will be the final Achievement Run on the public YouTube channel. after this, the series will go to my Ko-Fi page, Ko-fi.com/qtegamers, and i'll be starting a new series on Tuesdays from next week.

This week i played against:
はるま - Rank 50
#ロ_すぷろ/それな - Rank 53
T.S - Rank 63

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Christmas Cup 1 Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Christmas Cup 1 Revival! (2023/12/18 9:00~2023/12/25 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the Christmas Cup 1 Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/PEehcIe-5jA. I managed to get a few wins in that video before someone tough came in and beat me.

It finally happened, i finally got 5 wins back to back! I have played over 70 of these cups and never managed it before, but today i finally did. but that's because it finally happened, i faced no human players! this is the first time that i never faced someone else. The Ai got a few bonuses here and there, but they were never a match for me this week. so whilst i won and even beat the boss a couple of times, it's a shallow victory because it wasn't against any human players.

The time has come to start retiring this series!

This week i played against no one!

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Pixel Sitri Cup Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Pixel Sitri Cup Revival! (2023/12/11 9:00~2023/12/18 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the Pixel Sitri Cup Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/oxQec5wx4ZM. That video is short like that one, but in that video i was unable to defeat the boss whereas this time i did it!

The gimmick this week was one that i't a fan off. but i was lucky in that it didn't get in the way too much. The gimmick is a square that changes the orb, inside said square, color. But this gimmick didn't change color to all the available colors, instead it was limited to a small set of colors. There were also fewer stages this week in comparison to last week so it was easy to get to the boss but it was very tough. i only managed to beat the boss once. This was also the second week running where i only played against 2 other human players.

This week i played against:
naaちゃん - Rank 68
おれ- Rank 54

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Amon Cup Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Amon Cup Revival! (2023/12/4 9:00~2023/12/11 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the Amon Cup Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/Zi80Cke8aUU. That video is shorter than this one and i did much better in that than this one, too!

I thought i understood the gimmick this week but i guess i didn't fully. it was difficult to understand how effective each thing i tried was. sometimes i seemed to do a lot of damage whilst others i didn't. i couldn't really tell why. i only faced a couple of people this week and they also seemed to struggle against the final boss. But even the computer managed to beat me this week!

This week i played against:
Zargus - Rank 76
JOKER - Rank 30

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Mille Cup Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Mille Cup Revival! ( 2023/11/27 9:00~2023/12/4 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the Mille Cup Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/jUXjI8TCz3Q. That video is shorter than this one and is the first time where i did worse in a Revival Cup than the Original Cup!

This wasn't a good week for me. the gimmick this week wasn't too difficult either. i just couldn't seem to keep the big scores coming right until the boss. so whilst i got to the boss a couple of times, i was never able to defeat it whereas it felt like the other human characters were able to beat the boss. I also had bad luck when it came to the bonus points so i wasn't able to climb the scores that way.

This week i played against:
みーど - Rank 55
ゆきぎけ - Rank 66
⊂===( • ω • ) ⊃ - Rank 53
Marty - Rank 67
アオトロ-ル - Rank 67

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Valeria Cup Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Valeria Cup Revival! ( 2023/11/20 9:00~2023/11/27 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the Valeria Cup Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/TGWaHPERguM. That video took over an hour and a half for me to get the achievements for that week!

It went well for me this week. i won a few matches and i got the achievements quite quickly. but it wasn't amazing. for example, i wasn't able to beat the boss, nor could i get to it regularly. I also didn't seem to have much luck with getting the big combos needed for the big points. But it was fun going up against some human players and having some close matches against them. it looks like they were having just as much trouble beating the final boss as i was.

This week i played against:
かなた - Rank 58
ヘロ - Rank 79
こんたあき - Rank 50

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Pixel Zuoh Cup Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Pixel Zuoh Cup Revival! ( 2023/11/13 9:00~2023/11/20 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the  Pixel Zuoh Cup Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/eREeSANOKVg. I think i did better in that cup than in this one!

It wasn't a great cup this week. i only played against two other players in two games. the rest of the games were up against the computer. i found it fairly difficult to make the needed matches for this cup quickly. it meant that whilst i got to the final boss a few times, i just didn't have enough time to defeat them. Without making the needed combos to get the big points, i wouldn't attack the enemies hard enough. so throughout this cup there are times when it looks like i'm about to make a big attack but i don't because i haven't triggered the attack bonus.

This week i played against:
ルーチヤ - Rank 67
お※ - Rank 65

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Sanada Yukimura Cup Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Sanada Yukimura Cup Revival! ( 2023/11/6 9:00~2023/11/13 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the  Sanada Yukimura Cup Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/YvXiZ8M86Y0. Back then, it took a long time to get all the achievements. i got unlucky with where the color swapper was located and i found it difficult to make the correct matches to get full powered attacks.

Even tho i only played against a few other human players, it was very competitive. so, in a way, it was exciting and challenging. i was keeping an eye on what stage the other players had reached. As i played more games. i got better and better so in the final game i was able to beat the boss for the first time. But i admit that for the most part i was lucky in that the orb changing location wasn't really in the way. in comparison to the first time i played this cup, i understood what was needed for dealing the most damage fairly quickly and focused on trying to do it.

This week i played against:
ジャンプ - Rank 44
☆REI☆ - Rank 72
ゆうま - Rank 56
どっへ - Rank 49

Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday - Nintendo Switch Edition - Halloween Cup 2 Revival - Achievement Run

Welcome to Puzzle & Dragons Tuesday! Sit back and either watch me play through, with no commentary, the cup or leave it running in the background as BGM!

I play and earn all the achievements from The Halloween Cup 2 Revival! ( 2023/10/30 9:00~2023/11/6 8:59 JST) in Puzzle & Dragons: Nintendo Switch Edition whilst using a GamePad and a docked Nintendo Switch.

This week is the Halloween Cup 2 Revival. i have played this cup before, https://youtu.be/G3xMouT-Dlc. Just like that video, it wasn't as straightforward in this revival. i was up against some tough human opponents once again.

Last week, https://youtu.be/MKiG0MmX-8Q, in Halloween Cup 1 i only played against 1 other player so i moved my gaming time back to Monday in hopes of finding more to play against. the level of competition against those i found was high but it often came down to the end of game bonuses to work out who would make it into the top 3. the Ai characters, once or twice, also got the end of game bonuses. In the final game, i did manage to get a win against the computer, but against the other humans i could only manage a 2nd or 3rd. even tho the results weren't what i was aiming for, i still had a fun time playing against them.

This week i played against:
ユルてィム - Rank 75
しゅうさ - Rank 64
$$ - Rank 73
EODM - Rank 70
れ!いんいん_TN_ - Rank 74
