Acitivison have announced that Call Of Duty Black Ops, from the developers Treyarch, will be playable in 3D on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of the game. The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game require a compatible 3D HD TV, PC gamers will require 3D Vision active-shutter glasses and NVIDIA GeForce GPU's.
The Call Of Duty 3D FAQ reveals only Xbox 360 consoles with a HDMI port can do 3D and those with a HDMI port must be set to operate at 720p. The Xbox dashboard is also not currently designed for 3D and won't be viewable whilst your TV is in 3D mode.
Press Release
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct 05, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- In what could become the definitive 3D game experience, Treyarch's Call of Duty(R): Black Ops will also be playable in stereoscopic 3D when the game launches at retail outlets worldwide on November 9th. Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today revealed that the game will be compatible with 3D-ready HDTVs and 3D PCs utilizing state-of-the-art active shutter 3D glasses, delivering true depth of field and an unprecedented level of immersion that is perfectly suited for the Call of Duty action experience. Call of Duty: Black Ops will be playable in both 3D and non-3D on the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation(R) 3 computer entertainment system and Windows(R) PC.
"Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops. Aiming down the sights of your weapons, flying in helicopters, rappelling down mountains, and moving through highly detailed environments are just some of the awesome experiences you will have in 3D with Black Ops," says Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch.
"Call of Duty: Black Ops is already the most anticipated entertainment launch of the year, and the addition of a fully playable 3D version will truly take gaming to the next level," said Chris Homeister, senior vice president and general manager of the home entertainment group at Best Buy. "Through our footprint of nearly 1100 retail locations across the country and online, as well as our wide selection of 3D-enabled products, Best Buy is uniquely positioned to bring this exciting experience to life for consumers. We're thrilled to partner with Activision to support this great new chapter in home entertainment."
Added Lamia, "we made sure the experience is seamless for gamers to use with a simple menu option to enable stereoscopic 3D or disable it at any time whether playing in the single player campaign, multiplayer or Zombies."
Call of Duty: Black Ops for Windows PC is NVIDIA(R) 3D Vision(R)-Ready and supports stereoscopic 3D gaming using 3D Vision active-shutter glasses and NVIDIA GeForce GPUs. For more information, go to www.nvidia.com/get3D.
For Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 system consoles, 3D features require a compatible 3D-ready HD TV. See www.callofduty.com/3d for more information.

Housemarque Discuss The Process Of Adding Stereoscopic 3D To Super Stardust HD
Housemarque have talked about the process and history of adding stereoscopic 3D to Super Stardust HD. they started thinking about adding stereoscopic 3D back in the summer of 2009, but they initially didn't think it would work as they were not going to compromise on 60fps gameplay in the game. the engine behind Super Stardust HD would need alot of work as they also needed to reduce the time it took to draw a frame from the current 16.7ms to 8.3ms.
The team knew that they had 50% of the PS3's SPU power left to use. the core engine to the game was going to be completely replaced. the team moved vertex processing from the GPU to SPU's and merged as many objects as possible into one drawcall. this was done by Autumn, and the first 3D version of Super Stardust HD was up and running. the next issue was a lack of 3D tv's to play the game. the team used the red and green 3d glasses to check the effect until they got 3D TV's in early 2010.
Changing the games engine also bought about benefits for the 2D version, split screen co-op went from 30fps to 60fps and 4x anti aliasing support has been added to 720p, whilst 1920×1080p support has been added. The 3D part of the game runs at 720p at 120fps. People with the game can update it for free now, the updated version if 5.00.

Bolt 3d movie....thoughts on games implications
I have just seen Bolt, the new Disney movie, and wow, its a great movie. one of the best disney movies ever. but that is not what makes it special. it's also 3d. whilst i admit to not seeing My Bloody Valentine, Bolts use of 3d is creative.
people mostly imagine that 3d is used to make things come out at you, but this movie used it to great effect in many areas. some simple things like the sphere of the hamsters ball.... in stead of looking like a sphere it actually was a sphere with a hamster in it. other great examples were using it to show depth. imagine playing Little Big Planet, a game which uses depth to move in a 3d environment, not always to great effect. however after watching Bolt, it shows how depth can be shown in 3d to great effect, making it clear whats behind, infront and even distance of an object.
back in 2008 CES, Sony showed off 3d gaming on the playstation 3 using WIpeout HD, Motorstorm and GT5 prolouge. and whilst i don't know what it looked like, after seeing Bolt i can imagine what it looked like. and i'm excited. whilst i'm sure developers would be able to do interesting things with 3d, the more immediate viewing experiance is like the change from standard def to high def. if it becomes mainstream, it will change how you watch/play games/ movies. whats best is that the PS3 can do this nativly, the only change would be the need for a 3d television (and silly Glasses). i imagine, and this is not a long shot, that before the consoles end, we will see 3d games on the PS3
