Sony Computer Entertainment Announce They Have Agreed To Acquire Gaikai For Around $380 Million

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) have announced they have agreed to acquire Gaikai for around $380 Million.

Sony's Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, had this to say:
"By combining Gaikai's resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE's extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences...SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices."

David Perry, CEO Of Gaikai, Said This:
"SCE has built an incredible brand with PlayStation and has earned the respect of countless millions of gamers worldwide...We're honored to be able to help SCE rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide."

This does not necessarily mean the PS4 will just be a cloud streaming box. Sony have said, and its been reported, that there used to be plans for a download only PS4 but the internet hasn't grown enough for this to be a reality, so instead something like the PS Vita offers games both at retail and on the PSN. i personally think the first we'll see of this is in the mobile space. Sony has mobiles and tablets and a streaming service of maybe PS1 and PS2 games would help ease pressures of battery and storage. The first we see of this merger on a Playstation product could be on the Vita with selected PS2 games, and maybe PS1 games, being offered via streaming.
