GameStop Survey Shows Families’ Plan to be Smart Spenders On Entertainment for Summer 2009
As Parents Seek to Stretch Entertainment Budget, Simple Family Pleasures Will Dominate Summer
GRAPEVINE, Texas --(Business Wire)-- Jun 23, 2009 Although many families plan to continue watching their budgets this summer, family fun still remains a top priority, according to a survey commissioned by GameStop (NYSE: GME), the world’s largest retailer of video games and systems, and conducted by Harris Interactive®. Four in five American families are planning to scale back on summer leisure activities, but parents confirmed that quality time together will play a major role in their decisions on how to wisely spend their dollars.

For example, the vast majority of parents who are planning to cut back on costly leisure activities this summer are planning to do something else instead. This includes turning to simple indulgences like eating ice cream together (62 percent) or sharing meals at home together (47 percent), and one in three (34 percent) expect to play video games together with their kids. Some of the leisure activities those families expect to scale back this summer include:
eating out (66 percent)
trips to theme parks or other attractions (46 percent)
small vacations (43 percent)
going to the movies (38 percent)
Parents who plan to do something else instead say popular and less expensive alternatives will include:
going to free community events (63 percent)
day trips (51 percent)
playing video games together (34 percent)
hiking/biking (31 percent)
For budget-conscious families (e.g., trying to stretch their dollar), the majority (87 percent) are taking advantage of coupons; two in three (64 percent) are shopping only during sales and one in four (25 percent) are looking to stores’ trade-in programs where they can save on new, used or refurbished goods.

“Quality family time does not need to be accompanied by a high price tag,” said Hillary Mendelsohn, Founder and President of thepurplebook: The Definitive Guide to Exceptional Online Shopping. “As a smart shopper and a mom, I appreciate GameStop’s trade-in program, which lets families convert old games into currency to be used for purchasing new titles. Not only does it help make the most of a family’s entertainment budget, but it also helps teach kids important lessons about managing money and making it go farther.” In fact, in 2008, GameStop returned millions of dollars to consumers that were used for obtaining new and pre-owned titles and hardware systems.

“We appreciate that American families are taking a close look at their spending this summer, and are pleased that GameStop is able to be a budget-friendly destination for entertainment that is as economical as it is fun,” said Paul Raines, Chief Operating Officer for GameStop.
Just in time for summer, GameStop is launching its Family Night In program, which is designed to help families maximize their entertainment budgets with special summer value offers and other incentives to customers who make their purchases on summer Tuesdays from June 23 to September 1. Zynga have announced a new free to play social game for Facebook. users can build and customise their Farm from the crops they grow, animals and Farm buildings. the aim is to earn the most money either individually, or together in your social group.

Press Release

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)-- Jun 23, 2009 Zynga (www.zynga.com), the largest developer of social games, announced the launch of a new farm simulation game, FarmVille, which will allow players to build and grow the farm of their dreams, with the help of their friends.

With this exciting new offering, Zynga brings its leading social game design to the broadest mix of Facebook users yet. FarmVille allows players to build and customize their farm from the very beginnings, plowing the land, and choosing what they want to grow from a large variety of crops such as strawberries, eggplant, wheat and soybeans. The farm is then theirs to cultivate how they choose. Players will also have options to purchase farm animals such as pigs and cows, and compliment your crops with other farm assets such as barns, windmills and greenhouses.

Nurturing the farm is the key to success for players and their network of fellow farmer friends: those who tend their crops diligently will see their farms flourish and their bank accounts swell. Players’ friends are a key element of success in FarmVille.

“We’re really excited about FarmVille. The farm category in social gaming has shown amazing growth over the past couple years, especially in Asia,” said Mark Pincus, CEO and founder of Zynga. “There is something universally appealing about farming which speaks to large, diverse audiences. FarmVille will take what players love about the farm genre, and add a mixture of new and delightful features and design elements that have been so successful for us in our previous games.”

Editorial feature for the videogame #2

Muggles and Magicians

Although you’ll be playing as Harry for nearly all of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceTM videogame - no spoilers about who else you’ll get to play, but if you remember the moment when Harry is out of action in the film you might manage to guess - everyone else in the game is just as detailed and full of character. Many of the actors from the film have provided their voices for the game, and the team have had access to photos and bodyscans of all the characters, so every raised eyebrow and fluttering cloak is accurately portrayed. For the first time in a Harry Potter game, it’s really possible to read the emotion in characters’ faces as they talk, thanks to the advanced facial animation system that’s been used. And it’s not just that the characters in the game look right and sound right - they moved right, too. EA has made every effort to perfect the animation for all the action in the film. To capture the moves that Harry can make on his broomstick it wasn’t enough to film a stuntman in a studio to get a decent approximation. Instead, one of the game team built a complete broomstick rig in his kitchen at home, bringing it in so the animators could experiment with every possible move by ‘flying’ one themselves.

Press Release
EA will provide the ultimate immersive experience for Harry Potter fans when they play the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince video game, available in the UK on the 3rd July 09.

For the first time in a Harry Potter video game, it’s possible to read the emotion in characters’ faces as they talk, thanks to the advanced facial animation system that was used during development. Many of the film’s actors provided their voices for the game, and the development team at EA had access to photos and body scans of all the characters, so every raised eyebrow and fluttering cloak is accurately portrayed in the game. Although you will play as Harry for nearly all of the game, the other characters in the game are just as detailed and full of emotion.

Not only do the characters look and sound like the actors in the film, the EA development team went to great lengths to ensure that the characters even move accurately. To capture the moves that Harry makes playing Quidditch on his broomstick, it wasn’t enough to just film a stuntman. One of the developers also built a complete broomstick rig in his kitchen at home and brought it in so the animators could ‘fly’ a broom themselves and experiment with every possible move.
