LONDON – 2 June 2010 - British developer Rare is to celebrate its 25th anniversary in the games industry this summer. Such a landmark provides a natural opportunity to reminisce over what has been a hugely impressive presence throughout that period, and to prepare for an equally influential future with a brand new look.
Throughout Rare’s lifespan, the world of videogames has morphed from the cottage activity of the ’80s into a thriving and vibrant entertainment industry, easily as significant as music and films in today’s market. Rare is extremely proud to have been at the forefront of this metamorphosis.
Now, as the company focuses its vision on an even more exhilarating future, the timing is perfect to introduce a distinctive new look. So Rare is thrilled to unveil its new identity, encompassing a brand new logo and branding soon to be extended to a full website relaunch at www.rare.co.uk.
The new logo is both modern and classic, adjectives that could be applied equally well to Rare itself.

EA Announce NBA Elite 11 For The Playstation 3 And Xbox 360
EA Have announced that the NBA Live series is now called NBA Elite. The first game with the NBA Elite moniker is NBA Elite 11 and it is coming to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this October. the new Control scheme and physics are just part of the evolution of the NBA Live series to NBA Elite.
The Hands-On Control scheme brings 1 to 1 responsiveness of a players movement and actions on court, whereas before the game would have predetermined animations, and it applies to everything within a players offensive and defensive arsenal. the new real time physics now means each player on the court can move independently of each other. the shooting system has also been overhauled, meaning the players location on court and user input have a great impact on shooting.
Press Release
GUILDFORD, UK., Calif. – 2nd June, 2010 – Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced today that NBA ELITE will be the new moniker of the long running EA SPORTSTM NBA videogame franchise. NBA ELITE 11 will revolutionize the way basketball simulation games are played, with an all-new technology base, a new control scheme and a real-time physics system. Currently in development for the PLAYSTATION®3 and the XBOXTM 360, NBA ELITE 11 will be available in retail stores this October.
“We plan to profoundly evolve the interactive basketball experience in a way that the category has not seen for a decade,” says Peter Moore, President, EA SPORTS. “In NBA ELITE 11, we’ll introduce a gameplay experience that gives fans the control on the court that they have been begging for in a basketball game for years.”
Using the design principles from some of EA SPORTS top rated franchises, NBA ELITE 11 introduces several significant gameplay changes that center around user control. The new ‘Hands-On Control’ scheme allows for one-to-one responsiveness of a player’s movement and actions on the court, as opposed to traditional predetermined animations that require users to wait while a scenario played out before making the next move. Hands-on Control applies to everything within a player’s offensive and defensive arsenal, including: dribble moves, dunks, drives to the basket, fadeaways, mid-air adjustments, blocks, steals and more.
The new real-time physics system in NBA ELITE 11 allows each player on the court to move independently of one another, removing the two-man interactions that have long taken the user control out of basketball simulation videogames. In addition, a new skill-based shooting system requires accurate user input, based on a player’s position on the court, versus the randomly generated dice rolls that have driven shooting in basketball videogames in the past.
“NBA ELITE 11 will give gamers the same skill set that a pro basketball player has at his disposal,” said David Littman, Creative Director, NBA ELITE 11. “This is the first basketball simulation videogame where you are controlling every movement, dribble move, shot, dunk, lay-up, steal and block in real time with one-to-one control. You’re no longer going to push a button and watch the computer generate a long animation sequence. It is like being on a basketball court with an amazing set of skills. This is going to change what people have come to expect from a basketball simulation videogame.”
“From the first day of development on this product, it was clear that we intended to pioneer a groundbreaking change in the basketball videogame segment,” said Jordan Edelstein, VP Marketing, EA SPORTS. “It’s a whole new game that warranted a brand new name to fully capture the transformation we intend to deliver in NBA ELITE.”
Electronic Arts has been releasing basketball videogames since 1983. The first game, titled One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird, was one of the first basketball games to feature real NBA players. The franchise was rebranded to become NBA LIVE with the release of NBA LIVE 95, a brand that has carried on for 16 years culminating in last year’s NBA LIVE 10. EA’s NBA-licensed franchises have sold more than 25 million units since 1995*.
NBA ELITE 11 will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system with an MSRP of $59.99. It is developed by EA Canada in Burnaby, B.C. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI.
EA SPORTSTM is one of the leading sports entertainment brands in the world, with top-selling videogame franchises, award-winning interactive technology, global videogame competitions and breakthrough digital experiences. EA SPORTS delivers personal access to the emotion of sports through industry-leading sports simulation videogames, including Madden NFL football, FIFA Soccer, NHL® hockey, NBA LIVE basketball, NCAA® Football and NCAA Basketball, Fight Night boxing, EA SPORTS MMA and Tiger Woods PGA TOUR® golf, and EA SPORTS Active.

“EA SPORTSTM has been making great hockey games in Canada for 20 years now, and the team behind the game is really passionate about the sport,” said Gretzky. “Being on the cover of the new Wii version of the game is exciting and is probably going to make me a bit cooler in the eyes of my kids.”
Gretzky is an NHL legend who accumulated a long list of accomplishments and awards during his 21 year career as a player in the NHL. He currently holds 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, six All-Star records, and is the only NHL player to have ever recorded 200 points in a season. Since retiring as a player from the NHL, Gretzky has been very active in the hockey world, serving as Executive Director of the gold medal winning, 2002 Canadian men’s national ice hockey team, and acting as a special advisor to the gold medal winning, 2010 Canadian men’s national ice hockey team.
“Making our games as close to the real thing has always been our focus,” says Creative Director, David Littman. “Now we are giving them an actual plastic hockey stick that the Wii RemoteTM and NunchukTM controllers plug into. Players can then use the new NHL®SLAPSHOT Hockey Stick to do all the moves in the game.”
NHL® SLAPSHOT is currently in development at EA Canada in Vancouver, BC and will be available for the Wii system in September, 2010. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI.

Press Release
GUILDFORD, U.K., June 1, 2010 – Today the EA Play Label of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that two Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsTM videogames are in development to coincide with the much-anticipated final adventure in the Harry Potter film series from Warner Bros. Pictures which will be told in two full-length parts. The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 videogame will be released this autumn on all major gaming platforms.
With all the action taking place outside of Hogwarts for the first time, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 represents a shift in tone for the Harry Potter games. On the run with a horde of merciless enemies on their tail, players will find themselves in unknown territory, far from the safety of the school grounds, fighting for survival at every turn.
“The final Harry Potter adventure has given us the opportunity to make a darker and more action-oriented game than we have before,” says Jonathan Bunney, VP, Head of Production at EA Bright Light. “We believe we are creating a Harry Potter game that the HD console gaming generation will appreciate and enjoy. We have built new technology specifically to allow us to prove that magic is a truly potent force and, in this game, players will need to use all their skills if they want to survive.”
“We have enjoyed a tremendous partnership with EA in collaborating on the Harry Potter videogames,” said David Heyman, Producer of the Harry Potter films series. “Over the years, the games have grown ever closer to the films in their art direction and in their spirit so it is exciting to know that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 videogame will capture the action and suspense of the upcoming film.”
The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 videogame is packed from start to finish with action and combat. Players will be on the run, fighting for survival on a desperate and dangerous quest to locate and destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes, engaging with Death Eaters and Snatchers in epic battle sequences at every turn. To amplify the action, players will encounter ferocious creatures from the previous films in addition to the adversaries Harry faces in the seventh film. They will need to muster their most powerful magic against relentless assaults from all sides. There are no more lessons, no more training. This time the danger is real. It’s time for players to fight for their lives.
A new game engine built specifically to leverage the technology of HD consoles ensures high definition graphics and intense combat gameplay that will immerse players in the action like never before! Under development by EA Bright Light Studio, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 are being developed for the PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360TM, WiiTM, Nintendo DSTM, Windows PC, and mobile devices.
About the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 film
Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction—the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.
Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort’s Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort…alive.
Harry’s only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale—the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks.
Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became “the Boy Who Lived.” No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.

What Have You Played This Week?
Football Manager 10 – PC – really enjoying my time at FC Bayern. I find them a good pallet cleanser and its good to come back to a team like that I feel. Nearly did the treble in my first season, gonna aim to do it in my second.
Enchanted Arms – PS3 – nearly 30 hours in and I don't think i'm quite at the end. In some ways the story is simple and easy to guess where its going, but it does throw in a few twists and surprises to keep it fresh. The average graphics and sound are fine, but what can be annoying is the frequency of which you battle enemies. Its obvious this has been done to make you spend more time in an area because there aren't too many areas to travel through and artificially extend the game. You can see that it was deliberate as the major enemies require you to keep levelling up. I do like the game, its kinda retro and decent and its not too hard to follow and play.
Monsters (probably) Stole My Princess– Minis – PSP – the art is fantastic and looks great on the PSP. The writing is clever, witty, and short, and the gameplay is soo simple and accessible, it all combines to make a great Minis title, even a great PSP game. The awards you get in the game are somewhat varied and pose some challenge, and the game modes do offer some quick play. The game mechanic may take a couple of goes to fully understand, but once it clicks you start gambling with how far up you'll let the monster get whilst trying to get the biggest combo.
what have you been playing this week? feel free to add your weeks gaming selection in the comments, or you can comment on the game i played this week.
