Mobile Friday - DDDigger - A Fun Digging Game With Nice Graphics And Music, But Has Intrusive Ads

For this week's Mobile Friday i tried DDDigger, on my iPhone 14 Pro.

it's another game from developers treeplla that may look simple at first but actually has some fun gameplay. You can check out my videos for Idle Lumbercat - Wood Games, https://youtu.be/j074foqCgrg, and Cat Snack Bar, https://youtu.be/hhqyaTmhXw4, if you want to know more about games from this developer. what's interesting about DDDigger, in comparison to those games, is that it's not really an idle game. there is a small idle mechanic in it, but the point is to play to earn coins, use those coins to upgrade weapons, play and go further and earn more coins, and so on.

The tutorial is barely there, but it's just enough to get the basics across and the game is basic enough to grasp it quickly, and if you don't it's not an issue as failing and trying again is part of this game's genre and ties into it's mechanics. no matter how good or bad you do, you'll earn some coins. the graphics are simple but effective. it's clear which levels of dirt has enemies, which have gold, the helpers are also distinct and each weapon is easy to see. there maybe a lot happening at times but i found it easy to see and follow what was happening.

What i'm not too happy about with DDDigger is it's claim that "Offline Adventure. Enjoy the game anytime, anywhere without an internet connection!" that it has in the app store. sure, there was no data download at the start and that is fantastic. but it does have intrusive ads. at the start of the video i was praising it for giving us the choice whether we wanted to get some in-game reward for watching an ad. it didn't bother me that it was offering different rewards at different points for watching an ad. i even praised DDDigger for be smart with it's in-game store ads as it kept them to items we've used. no, where DDDigger goes wrong is having ads suddenly popup after a run. there was no warning, no asking for permission, and i certainly wasn't expecting it to have them because it claimed that it was an off-line game. it appears the ads come after every 2 games played.

In this video, the ad situation wasn't that bad in the grand scheme of things. but i can easily envision that as you get further into the game, you'll need to start grinding out games to earn enough coins to level up stuff. this'll mean having to play more and more games, which means more and more ads. these videos use data and it wouldn't take long for the ads to slowly eat into data limits. because of this, i can only really recommend DDDigger to be played over wi-fi. i had a good time playing it, i really enjoyed the music too, but the ad situation completely changes things.

Mobile Friday - Idle Lumbercat - Wood Games - It Looks Great But The Grind Comes Too Soon

For Mobile Friday this week is i tried out Idle Lumbercat - Wood Games, also known as Lumbercat: Cute Idle Tycoon, from  @treepllainc6467 .  I Played this on my iPhone 14 Pro, but it's also out on Android.

This isn't the first game from treeplla that i've played for Mobile Friday. Last year i tried out Cat Snack Bar, https://youtu.be/hhqyaTmhXw4, but the grind in that game came fast and it started not being fun to play. i wanted to know if things had changed after a year in terms of their game design.

From the beginning, it's clear that their character design hasn't changed and i personally think that's a good thing as it helps their games stand out more against all the other idle games with animals as part of the story. I like how bold and bright the colors are in the background and how clear everything is. Whereas the cats themselves are a little more muted or pastel in color. they're also not as clear and sharp as the background but i think it works as it gives them more of a "fluffy" feel.

But by the 10 minute mark i was already feeling the grind. there is a lot of depth to this game and much more to unlock than what is shown in the video. but it's that initial pacing that they don't get right. Many idle games have the same problem, but i feel they tend to succeed in hiding the grind through things such as an expanded tutorial that helps the player not only through the first stage but also into the second stage, using the second stage for reminders.

Whilst i was making some progress, it was also starting to be clear that progress was slowing down to such an extent that it was like the game wanted me to put it down. the amount of money needed was just getting too much. But there's another element that didn't get enough of a tutorial and that's the mangers. I don't know if you can only get them via loot boxes or not. I'm not even sure how or when i can get loot boxes in game outside of the store. The store wasn't introduced and when i opened it there wasn't another tutorial detailing what each of the currencies were and what they did. These are things that could be delt with better that would also help cover the grind.

The only obtrusive advert i came across was from the game itself. i don't mind self promotion, but if that promotion has currencies and things we've yet to be introduced to then it's poorly timed. I do like that there are optional adverts and the game has some interesting benefits for the player when using them. i felt that these were rarely obnoxious and mostly clear. so some room for improvement but what they have is good.

Idle Lumbercat - Wood Games is a fine idle game. it's pacing makes it feel like it wants the player to play in short bursts and that would be good for people who are commuting. there is a lot left to unlock, i just worry that it'll take a long time and feel like it took a long time.

Mobile Friday - Cat Snack Bar - A Grinding 35 Minutes

Mobile Friday this week is Cat Snack Bar, a game that's out across iOS and Android app stores by treeplla.

This is a game that had been advertised to me in a few games and i was curious if it was actually as cute and fun looking as those videos showed. i had an idea that it might be an idle game, but no idea how it would go about doing that.

Starting it for the first time, it became quite clear how it was going to work. there is an option to buy red crystal/ruby gem things, but the game's main push is for you to watch adverts. whilst it's nice that it's not recommending/pushing purchases, what's not great is how little reward there seems to be to watch an advert. for example, when you watch an advert you get 5 minutes of double earnings. in other games i play that is 4 hours of double earnings.

another thing that becomes clear quickly is that the game gets grindy quicker than other idle games i've played. a while ago i checked out Star Trek: Lower Decks: The Badgey Directive, https://youtu.be/5rA9Fb4SVhI, and that video is much longer than this one. that game didn't start to feel grindy until near the end of the hour. Plus, that game is also telling a story so it was nice to stop and read the story. in Cat Snack Bar, i started feeling the grind by the third stage of the first area. the first two were done in around 10 minutes, but after 20 the third stage was maybe half way there. the first area had a further 4 stages.

It does look good and cute, the colors are bold and the designs work. for picking up and playing for a few minutes it's fine. but the game's poor music, loud sound effects, and immediate grind do work against it. i feel like the first area needs rebalancing to get players to the main goal, to the thing that was highlighted in adverts and in treeplla's own videos, they need to get players to the first big shop where we, the player, can see and watch the cats in action all at once. but until then, the grind is the main thing holding back the game for now.
