Jonathan Blow has written a blog post to help clarify Thekla Incs decision to come to PS4 and console exclusivity. first he confirms that The Witness is a timed console exclusive, if they wanted to they could release a PC and iOS version of the game at the same time. they are currently only working on the PS4, PC and iOS versions of the game so the exclusivity could be as long as it takes them to bring the game to other platforms. Sony did not Pay Thekla Inc anything for the exclusivity, it was Thekla Inc's choice.
Jonathan Blow says the reason why they went with PlayStation 4 and not say the next Xbox is because Sony came to them. Thekla Inc started coming to PS4 developer events and got a dev kit. whereas with Microsoft, Thekla Inc don't have good communication with them and therefore no nothing about the next console beyond internet leaks. in the end, the tech people at Thekla Inc went with the PlayStation 4 as they liked the specs more and what the console is being positioned as. the relationship has naturally grown and culminated in the timed console exclusivity and showing at the PS4 announcement.
