Nintendo Reveal A Large Version Of The DS Lite Was In Development

In The Latest Iwata Asks feature on Nintendo UK, it is revealed that soon after the Nintendo DS Lite was released, research and development began on a Large Screened Nintendo DS. Ultimately, the Large Nintendo DS was shelved.
Yoneyama reveals that research into a Large Screened DS started because:
"Certainly. Well, after the Nintendo DS Lite came out, we wanted to make the graphics a bit more easily viewable by having bigger screens and we even got as far as producing a mould, conducting developmental trials and were at the stage where we could have gone into mass production..."
In The Interview, Yoneyama reveals that the product was never produced because:
"Things were going very well with the DS Lite, so it was decided that we’d put it on the back-burner for the time being."
And Iwata says that Nintendo's focus was to make more Nintendo Wii's.
"We were also struggling to try to ramp up the production of the Wii console which had been released in 2006, so I thought that to release yet more hardware and further diffuse our energy would have been wrong."
Yoneyama reveals that technical issues were also to blame for the Bigger Screened Nintendo DS Lite being shelved.
"But at the time, in terms of cost, our limit for the LCD screen size was about 3.8 inches. Also, we wouldn’t have been able to use wide-viewing angle LCD displays as we’ve been able to with the Nintendo DSi XL."

What Have You Played This Week?
Not too much played this week. There generally was a lot of news to deal with meaning I only played a little here and there.
Football Manager 10 – PC – My Family were kind enough to get me the new game in the series. Some major changes to menus and options have made playing this game hard, so to help I changed the look to FM 09. but even then, that look has been changed also. I do like the custom league feature and there are several leagues that people have done that can be added. Got to play lots more of it before I get a deeper feel for the game.
Super Smash Brothers Brawl – Wii – slowly working my way through the story mode. Over half way so far.
Super Paper Mario – Wii – I've never played any of the Paper Mario games and thought this would be a good start. It looks really good, the simple art and bold colours highlight what the Wii can do. The story is a bit of a stretch, but the character inter-actions, history, and twits help it greatly. The game is taking longer than I thought it would. It does feel like it's been padded out a bit, but its not too distracting. The 2d/3d mechanic is fun and the game makes use of the Wii's pointer in a good way. The game uses these to make some interesting puzzles. The controls are perhaps too simple, making you go into menus to do things, but that is either down to the WiiMote or the developers. I am enjoying it, despite its length, and look forward to seeing how things develop.
Star Trek Online - Beta– PC – it has taken along time on my rubbish internet connection to download this so I haven't got much time into it, the file is over 6.6GB in size!. So far, it looks good, ship combat is fun, space is really massive, ground combat is fine, and the mechanics are being explained well. The controls are fairly simple, but I am only a little way in. I look forward to seeing what I can do in the Beta and would really love to play the game when it comes out...just need money, lol.
Fl0w – PS3 – I finally downloaded the Trophy patch for this game and played it alittle. I got some trophies and that's about it. I had completed and played through the game a few times already...and the trophies will make you do it again. There not the easiest trophies to get and a couple will be difficult.
What have you been playing this week? feel free to add your weeks gaming selection in the comments, or comment on my selection for this week

Activision Announce Modern Warfare 2 Retail Sales Have Surpassed $1 Billion Worldwide

Activision have announced that Modern Warfare 2 has sold over $1 Billion at retail worldwide Since its launch in November 2009.
Press Release
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan 13, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to set sell-through records crossing the $1 billion mark in retail sales worldwide since its launch in November, according to internal Activision estimates.
In its first five days alone, the game sold an estimated $550 million worldwide, outpacing five-day worldwide theatrical box office gross figures for such films as Avatar, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Dark Night, according to internal Activision estimates and boxofficemojo.com.
"Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records," said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. "There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game."
Modern Warfare 2 is rated "M" (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Language. For additional information about the game, visit www.modernwarfare2.com.

Flips - Percy Jackson
Press Release
Guildford, UK – 14th January 2010 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that it is developing a new title, Percy Jackson, for its FLIPS interactive book series created exclusively for the Nintendo DS™. FLIPS provides kids with a new fun way to read and interact with Rick Riordian’s incredibly popular mythological book series.
FLIPS Percy Jackson will include all five books from the fantasy series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, along with two bonus titles, offering fans a new perspective on the action-packed tales of the modern teenage Demigod, whose mother is a mortal and whose father is the Greek God Poseidon. Titles include:
• The Lightening Thief
• The Sea of Monsters
• The Titan’s Curse
• The Battle of the Labyrinth
• The Last Olympian
• The Demigod Files
• Tales of the Greek Heroes by Roger Green
“The digital reading space is a growth sector and we’re thrilled to add such a hugely popular title to the FLIPS range, helping to grow an even larger base of young readers,” said Keith Ramsdale, VP and General Manager, UK, Ireland and Nordics for Electronic Arts. “Our previous 4 titles in the FLIPS range encompassed a broad scope of fictional genres and Percy Jackson provides a great complement to the range, showcasing how the Nintendo DS can encourage reading and engage young people.”
"We're thrilled with the addition of the Percy Jackson series to the Flips range,” said Jeremy Ettinghausen, Digital Publisher at Penguin. “The stories are perfectly suited to treatment in this way and the additional material gives real benefit to young readers keen to delve deeper into the world of the Greek Gods. Children's response to the FLIPS titles already published has been really pleasing and we're sure that they will enjoy this new addition to the range."
FLIPS Percy Jackson draws kids into the story with an array of interactive features. For example, readers are beckoned to collect coins throughout the books. Those coins can be spent in the bestiary containing a database of photos and information of all monsters found in the novels. Currency can also be spent in the Family Tree area, where players can access detailed information about the various Gods and Demigods and their relationships with each other. Even more detail can be accessed on Greek and Roman mythology via a link to The Penguin Dictionary of Classical Mythology.
Other engaging, interactive features include using the touch screen to access character profiles and facts, and challenging quizzes that pop up sporadically to test the reader’s story knowledge. The new FLIPS title will spark concentration as kids use the DS stylus to turn the pages, animate links and experience cool sound effects that surface on each page. Additionally, FLIPS Percy Jackson will provide a shared experience as players utilize the DS wireless capabilities to swap sample chapters and unlock bonus content with friends.
FLIPS Percy Jackson will be available in February, 2010 and will carry a RRP of £24.99.
