Android Game Of The Week – Bonsai Blast

This will be a new feature where each week i'll talk about my Android game of the week. Most of the games will be free as I do not have the funds to buy full price games. The handset I have is a HTC Hero (T-Mobile UK Branded G2).
The format may change slightly in future weeks. Feel free to comment.

Bonsai Blast has been available on the Android Market for a while know and is perhaps one of the more well known games you can buy for free. The game is similar to the more well known Zuma game series. It is one of the larger file sizes on the Android Market, but that never feels like a problem when you play the game. The game loads very quick and the front page shows high quality art which is consistent throughout the game. The front page will also show the few game modes available.
Adventure tasks the player with completing stages in 3 different worlds, each stage being slightly different to the other, whilst survival lets you play any of the unlocked stages from adventure until you loose. Adventure offers quick gameplay with the stages not feeling to long. If changes up the gameplay by either changing the layout of the stage, the different use of power-ups, or inserting objects in a stage which need to be avoided or used.
The few game modes are never really a problem as both Survival and Adventure game modes well done. The music in the game is in keeping with the art style of Bonsai Blast, but is average, whilst some of the sound effects are a bit too simple. You may find that other time you turn down the volume.
The game appears to be touch only and for the most part it is accurate, but there are occasions where you need to change the platform your shooting from and it doesn't register the move and shoots a ball in that direction. There are also occasions when the ball doesn't quite go in the direction you aimed for. This could be gameplay or it could be me as i'm not used to the HTC Hero's capacitive screen. Ultimately, it never becomes a issue that ruins gameplay.
For anyone with a Android device, Bonsai Blast is a game you should download and play as it's a perfect introduction to what Android devices can do and touch screen gaming.
What Have You Played This Week?
Again not too much played this week. i got a little too hooked into Football Manager 09.
Football Manager 09 – PC – I decided to go back to a favourite team in the game, FC bayern Munchen. They are not my favourite team, that's Ipswich Town, but they are one of the easiest teams to play as, which enables me to look for other players, tactics and such. Would love to get the new game, but unfortunately I can't afford it, but what is great about the Football Manager games is that you can play them for a long time, even if a new version has come out (typically as the newest Football Manager needs 1 patch for it to get great.)
Fat Princess – PS3 – I played alittle. I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be as many people online as when it came out. It's understandable, and this week even more so as Modern Warfare 2 is now out. I hope things pick up soon.
Tokobot – PSP – I have been interested in this game for a long time and was happy when it came through. Its a simple concept with simple controls, but it all fits with the graphic/art style and the story. I haven't got too far as yet, but it has done the tutorial in a clever way, incorporating it into the story. The graphics are great for the age of the game, but I do have the feeling that it may be a short game. The load times are acceptable. It's a little quirky, the story and art maynot be for everyone as it does have a anime style.
Modern Warfare 2 – PS3 – this game was going for £26 in my local Morrisons and my folks were kind enough to get this. After the frustrating initial update, then the lack of trophies working, and multiplayer not working. I left it alone until it was fixed.
This is my first Call Of Duty Game so it has taken a while to get used to the controls and the gameplay style. I played some of the game and got stuck on the russian so I decided to play online. I knew I wouldn't be good, I knew people would be better so I thought it would be the best place to learn how to control the game. And I was correct, it is taking time get used to it all, but i'm glad i'm improving.
I can see what the fuss is about, it looks great, it has a interesting story, but for me it hasn't hooked me like Killzone 2 did, and that includes single player and multiplayer.
WipEout HD Fury – PS3 – Back playing online. I got the update which fixed some things, which I have not noticed, and added the adverts. They are not obtrusive and at least relevant to the PlayStation brand. Previously, the adverts were increasing the games load times, this time they do appear to the fit load times of the game. The load times for WipEout HD Fury are not that long which kinda makes adverts short a perhaps a little pointless.
What have you been playing this week? feel free to add your weeks gaming selection in the comments, or comment on my selection for this week

Microsoft Has Announced That The Xbox 360 Has Sold 10 Million Units Across Europe, Africa, And The Middle East

Microsoft has announced that after 4 years, the Xbox 360 has now sold over 10 Million Units across Europe, the Middle East, And Africa.
In The press release, Microsoft also say that they "...think that Xbox Live currently is about 12 to 18 months ahead of its main rival PlayStation Network when it comes to offering service and content beyond traditional games,”
Press Release
LONDON – 12 November 2009 -Xbox 360 today announced that it had achieved console sales to 10 million consumers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in just four years. Reaching the landmark number has meant that Xbox 360 is the only console to achieve year-on-year growth across the region this year[1]. The launch next week of instant streaming HD movies, Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm on Tuesday 17th November 2009 transforms Xbox LIVE into the largest social network connected to the TV and strengthens Xbox 360’s already impressive line up of interactive entertainment services.
“Xbox 360 continues to pull ahead of the competition when it comes to delivering on a complete home entertainment experience and we think that Xbox Live currently is about 12 to 18 months ahead of its main rival PlayStation Network when it comes to offering service and content beyond traditional games,” said Martin Olausson, Director of Digital Media Research at Strategy Analytics. “By introducing innovative new services and content such as Natal, instant streaming of full 1080P HD video, and integrating social media features such as Twitter and Facebook, Xbox will likely attract a wider audience than its rivals and is in a great position to maximize sales in the next few years”.
2009 has been a pivotal year in Xbox’s journey from its gaming origins to now changing the way people consume and share entertainment content, interact with each other online and continue to play great games. It’s a change that people are embracing; there are more than 20 million Xbox LIVE active members worldwide and there have been over 1 billion downloads of gaming and entertainment content, with movie downloads doubling in the last year alone.
“Reinventing entertainment through, play, watch, connect and share. This is the vision that we have for Xbox 360 and today that vision is the reality for 10 million Xbox owners. European consumers are very discerning and demand a connected entertainment experience. That’s why we focused on providing content that is right and relevant for them and entertainment beyond just gaming to movies, music and social networking. We have delivered on this promise and next week will bring real innovation into the living room through instant streaming high definition movies, connecting with friends on Facebook and Twitter and a personalised music channel. Together, this represents a real shift in the way people are entertained every day,” said Chris Lewis, vice president Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Europe.
This reinvention of entertainment has already seen a shift in where the Xbox lives in the home, with the majority (60%) of Xbox consoles now becoming integrated into the family living room. It has also caused a shift in the Xbox customer base as now 35% of Xbox customers are women and 64% are over the age of 25[2]. The arrival of the much anticipated ‘Project Natal’ will create a new category of gaming and entertainment experiences through controller-free gaming that makes Xbox 360 more inclusive and relevant to an even wider audience.

PopCap Announce A iPhone/iPod Touch Bejeweled 2 Free Update That Adds Bejeweled Blitz

PopCap have announced that they will be updating the iphone/iPod Touch version of Bejeweled 2 for free. The update will bring Bejeweled Blitz, which itself will get Facebook Integration, to Bejeweled 2.
Bejeweled Blitz for the iPhone/iPod Touch will have the same features as the Facebook. Facebook Blitz leaderboards will be shared with the iPhone/iPod Touch and you will also be able to see which of your friends are currently playing the game.
PopCap say that this is the first multiplatform game they have released which has interoperable adaptations of a game, the single interactive leaderboard for both the Facebook and iPhone/iPod Touch versions of Blitz, and also the first time that PopCap have taken a social game beyond the Web.
Press Release
SEATTLE, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of the world's most widely played video games, today announced a free update for Bejeweled® 2 for iPhone™ and iPod® touch (collectively referred to below as iPhone). Bejeweled 2 is one of the five best-selling iPhone games of all time, and the new update, available at no cost to current owners of Bejeweled 2 for iPhone, adds an exciting new mode featuring Facebook Connect integration of the "Bejeweled Blitz" game previously found only on Facebook.com. The new iPhone Blitz game mode replicates the wildly popular connected version of the game that allows consumers to play anywhere, anytime, with scores and achievements reflected on their own and their friends' Facebook profiles. Bejeweled 2 for iPhone carries a list price of US$2.99 and is available worldwide via the App Store. Anyone who has previously purchased Bejeweled 2 for the iPhone can receive the new Blitz mode as a free update via the App Store or iTunes.
"Ultimately, social gaming is about being able to play games with and against your friends, and the new Blitz update for Bejeweled 2 on iPhone lets you play against your friends anywhere," explained John Vechey, co-founder and director of PopCap's social gaming initiative. "This is a natural next stage in our multi-platform and social strategies. Blending the Facebook and iPhone Bejeweled communities should prove very compelling for players."
The new Blitz update for Bejeweled 2 on iPhone offers the full feature set of Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook, including bonus multipliers, laser gems, star medals, real-time gem swapping (even while the gems are falling into place) and posting of scores to your (and your friends') shared leaderboards. Scores and medals achieved while offline will be recorded the next time you connect your iPhone.
After connecting to Facebook and launching the Blitz mode of Bejeweled 2, iPhone players will be able to see their full list of Facebook friends who are playing Blitz (either on the Web or on an iPhone), including pictures and their friends' scores - just like the leaderboard from the Web game. During play, scores are automatically uploaded to Facebook, including any earned achievement star medals. Leaderboards will seamlessly reflect scores achieved on both the iPhone and Web in a single integrated list so players can try to improve their scores and track their friends' performances from either place. This marks the first time that PopCap has released multi-platform interoperable adaptations of a game and the very first time that PopCap has extended social gaming beyond a Web application.

Press Release
DURHAM, N.C. --(Business Wire)-- Nov 11, 2009 Funcom has decided to repeat the successful re-evaluation campaign that went live earlier this year for the best-selling massively multiplayer online role-playing game “Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.” Previously active players are encouraged to come back to the game and play free of charge for two entire weeks. As an additional incentive for players to come back and play for free, they will also receive a double experience boost throughout their free period. Those who decide to continue playing beyond their free period can also look forward to fantastic rewards such as guaranteed access to the beta test for The Secret World, a free copy of the expansion and more.
“We are very proud of what we have been able to do with the game since launch,” says Morten Larssen, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Funcom. “The game has grown and improved at a remarkable pace, and we continue to introduce new content, new features and new improvements. We are introducing these fantastic rewards as we know that coming back to an MMO demands effort, and we want to make sure that as many former players as possible are exposed to the new and improved ‘Age of Conan.’”
Besides receiving an incredible experience boost throughout November, players who choose to continue subscribing to the game after their free period can look forward to a range of exclusive rewards:
*Subscribing for 1 month gives 7 days extra game time for no additional cost
*Subscribing for 3 months also guarantees a spot in open beta for The Secret World

This is a time-limited offer only, and is also available to current players. Players who have signed up for these subscription plans in October have already secured their respective reward. The Secret World beta reward includes access to the later stages of the closed beta, and a date for access will be announced later. The free download of the expansion will become available when the expansion launches.
New players are also encouraged to take advantage of these offers. New players who purchase the game now and sign up for one of these subscription plans will also have secured their respective rewards.
Since launching last year, “Age of Conan” has seen a vast number of improvements, new content and new features. Previous players will find new content such as the adventure region of Ymir’s Pass, new dungeons such as The Iron Tower, and new features such as the player vs. player notoriety system and a complete re-design of the items and character statistics mechanics of the game.
